“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.”

― Plutarch

‘Plutarch’s Lives’ or ‘Parallel Lives’ is one of the most important and comprehensive collection of biographies of famous Greek and Roman figures. Plutarch was not so much focused on providing a historical account of these famous individuals as much as he was seeking to write of the type of person they were and the life in which they lived. He focuses on Alexander the Great, Romulus and Remus, Demosthenes, Cicero, Brutus, Julius Caesar, and many other important figures.

This impressive, and stunningly beautiful volume features all of the expected biographies as well as a few additional ‘lives’ not included in any previous impression. This 1676 edition features the lives of Hernan Cortez, Basil, Duke of Mscovy, Sebastian I, King of Portugal, and Christopher Columbus! Obviously, these newer biographies were not written by Plutarch, but rather supplemented by 17th-century authors. English translation and supplements from Thomas North, Andre Thevet, and Charles de L’Escluse out of the James Amyot French.
