Based on Ecclesiastes chapter 12, this book recounts King Solomon’s account of old age – remembering youth, knowing dangers, relationships and connections, death and dying, diseases, and the body both holy and physical. Smith describes three separate stages of old age, per Steven Smith:

1. “crude, green, and while it is yet in the beginning” (working years)
2. “full, mature, or ripe” (retirement, but active)
3. “extreme, sickly, decrepit, ever-growing old age” (the end of life)
