John Owen was a 17^th-century English theologian whose Puritan ideals appeared throughout his sermons and published works. However, in addition to his devotional and doctrinal works, Owen wrote numerous historical works, most importantly “On Apostasy”. Published in 1676, this work was written to describe the sad state of religion at the start of the Stuart Restoration in 1660 England. The subtitle of this work is perhaps the best description of this work: “an enquiry into the causes and reasons of the decay of the power of religion in the world”.
