John Quarles, son of the notable 16th-century English emblemist, became well-known Royalist poet best remembered for his epic poem “Fons Lachrymarum”. This collection of poems was written during his time in exile – banished from England to Flanders for his role in the English Civil War. The poems exhibit themes of meditation, complaints, and lament during a time of great unrest in England.
