“History of the Government of Venice” is a rare, 17^th-century treatise on the court of the Republic of Venice. Author Abraham Amelot de la Houssaye served as a French delegate to the court of Venice and was exposed to the history and daily proceedings of Venetian government.

Though while the work was initially approved by the Venetian government, following its 1676 release, it was vehemently attacked and protested, causing Houssaye to be imprisoned in the Bastille for his political criticism. The book was heavily censored and edited, and much of the content was suppressed for all subsequent editions, including this supplement to the 1677 Paris edition.
