1684 Puritan Sola Scriptura Bible JESUIT v Protestant Reformation Chillingworth
The Story:
- Anglican Christopher Potter and Edward Knott (pseudonym for Jesuit Matthew Wilson) furiously clashed over the authority of the Bible during the Reformation. Knott was adamant that the Bible could only be interpreted through Church tradition – a stance that Potter could not tolerate.
William Chillingworth intervenes:
- Chillingworth supported Potter. And did so with his book “The Religion of Protestants” – a book which became one of the pillars of Protestantism during the Reformation.
The Book:
- “Religion of Protestants” argues that the Bible alone is sufficient for understanding salvation (i.e. sola scriptura)
- Chillingworth also attacked Jesuit ideals and accused Knott of dishonesty and manipulation evidenced through Catholic doctrine changing repeatedly over the centuries.
