1686 John Dryden Defense of Papers of Charles II of England Catholic Protestant
‘A Defence of the Papers’ was an important collection of letters concerning the authority of the Catholic Church. Edward Stillingfleet, a British Anglican Protestant, published a work attacking the Catholic Church. John Dryden was the most prominent contributor of these essays, unfortunately, Dryden paid a heavy price for his Catholic faith. Dryden lost his position as poet laureate much in part to Charles II and James II of England – even though Charles II attempted to introduce religious freedoms for Catholics and Protestants alike.
This collection of defense treatises features the works of various anonymous authors; however, the defense of the third paper was by John Dryden (p. 85-126).
