Jean Mabillon, a 17th-century French Benedictine monk, was tasked by King Louis XIV of France to venture on a tour of Italy in search of early Church history books to expand the royal library. The events of his journey and his findings along the way were published in a book entitled ‘Museum Italicum seu Collectio’. This book was responsible for giving Mabillon the moniker of the ‘father of paleography’.
