John Selden is generally considered England’s first legal historian. He questioned all of his contemporaries and their definition of ‘history.’ He spent time trying to discover history by researching the past, more so than that of his colleagues. He claimed, as seen in the quote above, that men of knowledge did not learn from the past, nor did they seek to discover the past. Selden sought to change this.

“Discourses”, an anonymously published work, is a collection of short essays describing the laws, government, politics, and history of Great Britain. Many of these discourses describe the state of Britain during the 14^th-century reign of Edward III, early Saxons, Normans, and Britons, English nobility, forestry, court proceedings, the clergy, and so much more.
