Jean-Baptiste Thiers was a 17^th-century French clergyman, who curiously, is best known for a treatise on the history and use of the wig. During his tenure at the Diocese of Chartres, there was a prohibition established on the ecclesiastical use of wigs. Thiers wrote this work to discuss the evolution of wigs and other headpieces and sought to show why they should be allowed. He covers hair barrettes, square caps, capuchins, chainmail aventails, and other forms of protective and cosmetic headdresses.
