Thomas Shadwell was a famous 17th-century English poet who wrote a number of plays and poems, many of which have been set to a number of songs. One of Shadwell’s earliest plays was ‘The Royal Shepherdess’ which was an adaption of John Fountain’s ‘Rewards of Virtue’. According to Lowndes, Shadwell altered the play and simply published under a new title in 1669.
