Unsure? Ask an Expert!

In 1693, Gregorio Leti produced a biographical account of Elizabeth I, Queen of England. While many books were written on the life of the last Tudor monarch, Leti was the first! Leti’s “Life of Elizabeth Queen of England” was the first of its kind and featured many aspects of her childhood, her romantic endeavors, as well as an account of her mother Anne Boleyn.

Even though Leti was called ‘inexact’ by the Catholic Encyclopedia and ‘inaccurate’ by the Lutheran church, his historical importance and relevance is well-known and unprecedented. (Mosheim, 194).

This rare first edition is illustrated throughout with 60 engraved plates consisting of portraits of important English figures including Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Mary I, Thomas Cranmer, and more! According to Vinciana, this book was written while Leti was traveling in England and was, unfortunately, not well-received in Holland or England and was especially disapproved of by the Catholic Church.
