Antoine Galland was a 17th-century French orientalist who is best known for his translation of ‘Arabian Nights’. However, his push to expand Europe’s appreciation for the orient extended beyond ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ to his own collection of Persian, Arab, and Turkish maxims entitled ‘Les Paroles Remarquables’. ‘The Remarkable Words and Maxims of Orientals’ was first published in 1694 and saw immediate and widespread success, much in part to it being shorter than similar works of maxims. (Dew, p.186).

This book is filled with clever sayings, witty jokes, and short anecdotes that, as Galland claims, come from ‘the Orientals’. This first edition was an important piece in the development of Orientalism in France and makes mention of various French authors and poets, George Wheler’s voyages, Amelot de la Houssaye’s travel notes, and even a political testament from Cardinal Richelieu.
