1694 Arcana Aulica Court & Courtier Walsingham English Politics Queen Elizabeth
Originally written by a French diplomat, Edward Walsingham’s ‘Arcana Aulica’ is an English translation and reworking of Eustache de Refuge’s ‘Treatise on the Court’ which is an instruction manual on how to run and maintain a successful organized court. The advice given by Refuge, and edited by Walsingham, is still considered to be relevant today in political circles.
Refuge encouraged bizarre and strange behaviors when interacting with others in the royal court – for instance. He notes that it is a common trick to stick your leg out and trip someone so that you can help them to their feet, which will earn you their gratitude. Refuge published this book during the reign of Queen Elizabeth and made references to successes in her court in England, even though the work was originally published in French.
This 1694 English edition was published in London and features an added, engraved title page.
