Unsure? Ask an Expert!

‘La Turquie Cretienne’ is a curious, late 17th-century book by Francois de la Croix – curious in the sense that it appears to be revised version of a work entitled ‘Etat Present des Nations & des Eglises Grecque’ by an author named La Croix. It is uncertain if the authors of these works are the same man or related to one another. Either way, this work is an important work on Christianity and Catholicism in the Middle East, Greece, Armenia, and in the Ottoman Empire.

This work; however, does not portray the Middle East, especially Istanbul (Constantinople), kindly. In fact, La Croix and his anti-Islamic views, is known to have wanted to burn Istanbul to the ground! (McCabe, p. 141). He even came up with his own plan of how to bombard the city from the sea, in which he formally submitted to Louis XIV.

This fine work is filled with accounts of religious sacraments, rituals, communions and celebrations, as well as physical and geographical descriptions of these places.
