Maximilien Misson was a 17^th-century French traveler best-known for his voyage through Italy in 1688. Following his tour, Misson published a fascinating account of his travels which, according to Spence, became “the standard travel guide to Italy for the following fifty years”. This travel guide is filled with impressive engravings including views of the Vatican, the leaning tower in Pisa, eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and Virgil’s Tomb.

This first volume from the 1698 edition includes illustrations and descriptions of custom and culture in Nuremburg, ancient Roman weapons and armor, view of Piazza San Marco in Venice, the Rialto Bridge, Venetian gondolas, the Bucentaure barges, Venetian Doge and nobles, Notre Dame de Lorette, and many others.
