Originally published in 1674, Louis Moreri’s “Grand Dictionaire Historique” was an encyclopedia focused on historical and biographical articles. The original French and English edition were critical in giving rise to more other dictionaries, such as Pierre Bayle’s “Critical Dictionary”. While this work was highly influential during its time, it was eventually replaced as the preeminent reference work when Diderot’s ‘Encyclopedia’ was printed.

This 1699 massive four-volume edition was published in Paris by Denys Mariette.
