At the end of the 17th-century, a massive dispute occurred between Catholic missionaries and Chinese locals over the use of traditional Chinese rituals in Christian worship. Known now as the Chinese Rites Controversy, this event caused a significant rift between Jesuits and the Chinese who followed Confusions. Furthermore, the Dominicans and Franciscans in China sided with the Chinese traditions and pushed back against the Jesuits. After Pope Clement XI intervened, the rites were ultimately banned for not being compatible with Christianity and were considered too secular for continuation.

Author Noel Alexandre published an account of the events during the 17th-century, “Conformité des ceremonies Chinoises”, first published in 1700.
