William Somner was a 17th-century English scholar who was known for his Anglo-Saxon language dictionary and his studies on the antiquities of Canterbury. Somner’s first work in 1640 was ‘The Antiquities of Canterbury’ in which he surveys the history of the city and environs of Canterbury. It covers the earliest times of Canterbury focusing on castles, cathedrals, monks and ecclesiastical history, as well as geographical history – rivers, streets, and hospitals.

 

This 1703 first folio edition was edited and enlarged by Nicolas Battely who included impressive full-page maps and illustrations. Lowndes even notes that his book is “an excellent work”!
