1704 Queen Elizabeth Tudor England Portraits Maps Henry VIII Anne Boleyn Leti 2v
In 1693, Gregorio Leti produced a biographical account of Elizabeth I, Queen of England. While many books were written on the life of the last Tudor monarch, Leti was the first! Leti’s “Life of Elizabeth Queen of England” was the first of its kind and featured many aspects of her childhood, her romantic endeavors, as well as an account of her mother Anne Boleyn.
Even though Leti was called ‘inexact’ by the Catholic Encyclopedia and ‘inaccurate’ by the Lutheran church, his historical importance and relevance is well-known and unprecedented. (Mosheim, 194).
This rare 1704 edition is illustrated with full-page engraved plates consisting of portraits of important figures including Philip II of Spain, Thomas Crowell, Catherine Medici, Marie Stuart, Anne Boleyn, and many others. According to Vinciana, this book was written while Leti was traveling in England and was, unfortunately, not well-received in Holland or England and was especially disapproved of by the Catholic Church.
