Edward Hatton was a 19^th-century English surveyor who played a significant role in the reconstruction of London following the Great Fire. He took a special interest in mathematics and commerce which propelled him to write “An Index to Interest” – a guide for lawyers, merchants, and bankers who needed a quick reference of interest tables. While other books with interest tables existed at this time, this particular work is unique in that Hatton included a movable dial to accompany the ‘circle of time’. Hatton says it was “contriv’d as the most easy and natural way of finding the days between any two in the year”. See photos for views of this curious invention.
