Richard Brathwait was a 17th-century English poet who is best known for his travel records of his journeys through England entitled ‘Barnabae Itinerarium’. More commonly known as ‘Drunken Barnaby’s Four Journeys’, this book is a satirical, humorous work which made light of drunkenness, persuading the reader that it was “the very fountain from which all wit flowed.” (Critical Review, 1805).

This 1723 edition was notable, not only for its full-page engravings, but for the inclusion of additional English notes and prefatory material, not in the previous two editions. Like other versions, this work features both English and Latin translations in verse, which contain descriptions of English towns and a vast knowledge of Latin classical works.
