1724 Famed BLACK BOOK 1ed Arms Order of the Garter ENGLAND Heraldry Illustrated
John Anstis was a 17th-century English heraldry historian who served as the King of Arms for the Order of the Garter. The Order of the Garter, established in the 14th-century, was one of the most prestigious chivalric orders in all of England. Because of his involvement in the order, Anstis began collection heraldic arms of noble officers and members and published them in an impressive work that was infamously called ‘The Black Book’! More commonly called ‘The Register of the order of the Garter’, this two-volume work features huge, full-page displays of heraldic arms with detailed memoirs of each member.
According to Wagner in “Heralds of England”.
“Glover, Camden and Dugdale are formidable names, yet it may be questioned whether Anstis did not in strictly heraldic learning surpass them all. In perusing his manuscript remains one is constantly astonished at the breadth and depth of his scholarship and his mastery of a vast range of primary sources.”
This 1724 first edition is complete and includes both volumes. Anstis had hoped to publish 8 volumes, but only these two came to fruition. Notable figures mentioned in this set include:
- Sir Henry Guildford
- Charles Montagu, Earl of Halifax
- Esme Stewart, Duke of Lennox
