“Hateful to me as the gates of Hades is that man who hides one thing in his heart and speaks another.”

― Homer, The Iliad

A very rare 18th-century edition of Homer, the legendary Greek poet responsible for the mythological epic poems the ‘Iliad’ and the ‘Odyssey. These two poems focus on Greek mythological heroes, their military conquests, and involvement in the Trojan War. Each of these titles have been printed and reprinted countless times.

This edition of the ‘Iliad’ and ‘Odyssey’ was edited and translated by Samuel Clarke, who included both the Latin and Greek texts in parallel. Clarke died in 1729, the same year as this first edition, and was only able to complete the first 12 books of the ‘Iliad’ before his death. His son completed the set, which was finalized in 1732 This complete 4-volume set is highly desirable and valuable.
