He found impressive treasures, coins, and handwritten manuscripts which inspired his famed book ‘The History of the Republic of Geneva’.

While the owner of this particular bookplate is unverified, it possibly belonged to François de Cossé, 11th Duke of Brissac (1868–1944), a French aristocrat and historical memoirist. The title of Duke of Brissac was originally created in 1611 for Charles II de Cossé, Count of Brissac, and has been held by the de Cossé family, even through its temporary interruption during the French Revolution with the death of Louis Hercule Timoléon de Cossé, 8th Duke of Brissac (1734–1792), a Grand Panetier of France and commander in chief of the King’s Constitutional Guard who was killed during the September Massacres.
