Thomas Hearne was an early 18th-century English scholar known for his editions of medieval chronicles. His most important works, however, were those that focused on the history of England, such as the lives of kings, and political feuds between Scotland and England. One such work was his “Ectypa varia” – a collection of engravings illustrating British history. The illustrations include portraits, city and town views, coins and medals, pottery and art, architecture and buildings, and so much more. Notable illustrations include:

  • Ancient Greek and Roman coins; Moroccan and Turkish coins
  • Edward the Confessor’s Chapel
  • Abbreviated text from the Domesday Book
  • Benedictine monks and cathedrals
    • Grimbald
    • Glastonbury Abby
  • 17th-century discoveries of buried gravestones inside Queen’s Arms Tavern in St Martin’s
  • Buildings and colleges of Oxford University
  • Ancient maps and manuscript examples
  • Medieval artwork depicting dragons!
  • Rubric of ancient British alphabet
