Johann Adam Kulmus was an 18th-century German physician and anatomist. He famous studied with Herman Boerhaave and published an important medical book entitled ‘Anatomical Tables’. While many medical treatises were published in Western Europe in the 18th-century, this was the first book of western medicine to be translated into Japanese. Kulmus’s studies set in motion many of the transformation to modern medicine in both Japan and China because of this book. Kulmus proved that the European anatomical tables correctly positioned human organs while the Chinese and Japanese traditions were wrong.
