Philippus Baldaeus was a 17th-century Dutch minister and voyager who is chiefly remembered for his voyage to Ceylon and his corresponding book reporting on his experience. This book was published in three distinct parts: description of coastal India, description of Ceylon itself, and a discussion on religions of India. The topographical descriptions in the first two sections describe towns, trade, people and influence of other countries on them. This book is often considered the most important source on the establishment of Dutch power in Ceylon and South India.

This particular third volume from the 1745 edition includes descriptions of Cranganor, the Isle of Vypin, Goa, and Kochi, as well as an impressive folding chart of the Malabar language, introducing it to the English-speaking world.
