1749 Epistles of Phalaris 1ed GREEK Letters Demosthenes Pythagoras Hippocrates
“Epistles of Phalaris” is a 2nd-century collection of philosophical writings, misattributed to the 6th-century BC tyrant leader of the same name. At the end of the 17th-century Richard Bentley published a thorough account of the epistles of pseudo-Phalaris – a work which inspired other English scholars to writer their own commentary on Phalaris. Thomas Francklin of Cambridge was one such scholar. Francklin translated each of these letters which hwere addressed to various ancient Greek figures such as Timander, soldier under Alexander the Great.
While their authorship is in question, these letters offer a rare, early insight into ancient Greek life and philosophy. This collection also includes letters from Demosthenes, Pythagoras, Hippocrates, and Artaxerxes.
