1750 Bury Romanorum Pontificum Catholic Church Popes GOLD Gilt Binding Linz
William Bury was a 17th-century Belgian theologian known primarily for his summation of papal history – ‘Romanorum Pontificum’. This work, published in the Austrian city of Linz, discusses the lives and papacies of the popes in a chronological manner.
While the contents of this work are desirable, the binding of this example is the most intriguing element and is most exquisite! In 1750, copies of Bury’s ‘Pontificum’ were bound with oxidized gold-stamping on the decorative covers. This example retains much of the original gold that was stamped into the leather. Beautiful!
