1754 1ed Mary Queen of Scots Letters Scotland England Goodall’s Examination
Walter Goodall was an 18th-century Scottish historian who is best known for his 1754 book ‘An Examination of the Letters Said to Have Been Written by Mary Queen of Scots’. In this book, Goodall sought to prove that the published letters of Queen Mary were frauds and in fact not written by the queen at all. This book, while much of it today is still uncertain, began an era in English literature which related to the life and reign of Queen Mary of Scots.
Per the DNB on this book:
“The work may be regarded as the inauguration of the apologist epoch of the literature relating to the unhappy queen. It shows acuteness and diligence, and many of his arguments are still made to do service in vindication of Mary, although others have been discarded, and his research have been supplemented by means of a more thorough examination, especially of the internal evidence bearing on the genuineness of the letters.”
