1756 Fortification FORTS Military Mathematics TOULON Fort J. Muller Illustrated
John Muller’s “Fortification, Regular and Irregular” is a rare 18th-century work on the construction, history, and use of forts. Muller, a German engineer, was well versed with military mathematics as well as artillery and ballistics, it was, however, his focus on fortification that proved to be his best work. It is evident that his knowledge of mathematics was critical in the writing of this work – note the impressive folding engravings of fort designs, walls, geometric angles, and even specific city forts such as the fort at Toulon. Muller utilized the established norms of fortification construction by Marshal de Vauban and Baron Coehorn to supplement and add credibility to this work.
