John Theobald’s “Medulla Medicinae Universae” is a rare 18^th-century dispensatory. Throughout the War of Austrian Succession, there was a growing need for care for the sick and wounded. Theobald wrote this book for British soldiers in Flanders during the war. This particular 1761 edition was collected and edited by John Pringle who included some of the original recipes for medicines used during the war, including treatment of women and children. Curiously, this book also contains the cure for gonorrhea which was commonly contracted while in military hospitals.
