Until the end of the 18th-century, the story of Joan of Arc was merely a legend, and little was written in histories about her life.  Voltaire wrote a poem that satirized the life of Joan of Arc – a decision that became wildly controversial. In fact, the sexist content and perverse eroticism found in “La Pucelle d’Orléans” or ‘Maid of Orleans’, caused it to be outlawed, banned, and burned throughout Europe for more than 100 years! This suppression made it one of the most restricted books of the 18th and 19th-century.
