Unsure? Ask an Expert!

A rare and highly desirable 18th-century first edition book about naval tactics and the development of military naval signals!

Sébastien-François Bigot de Morogues was a French sailor known for his commands in the Seven Years’ War, most notably serving in the Royal Artillerie in the French Navy in the Battle of Quiberon Bay. Following the Seven Years’s War, Morogues published his first book of military tactics, “Tactique navale”. This book was so popular that it was immediately published in several languages, however, the 1763 first edition is considered the most desirable.

Corbett says of this book,

the most scientific book on naval tactics ever written… It consists of over 200 pages of orders with signals annexed, written in the form of sailing and fighting instructions. Although the appropriate signals are annexed to the instructions, there is an eighty-page table of signals, for day, night and fog. This forms the draft lay-out of what a signal book should be.”

This example includes all 49 exquisite engravings of ship movement and positioning, formations, and navigational practices.
