1764 VOLTAIRE 1ed Contes de Guillaume Vade Discours aux Welches French Lit
“Let us read and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.”
― Voltaire
Voltaire was a versatile and prolific writer, producing works in almost every literary form, including plays, poems, novels, essays, and historical and scientific works. He wrote thousands of books and letter and frequently made use of his works to criticize intolerance, religious dogma, and the French institutions of his day.
Like many writers, Voltaire was not immune to harsh criticism, nor was he afraid to be critical of France, government, or people of status. Such was the case with his book ‘Contes de Guillaume Vade’, which Voltaire never put his name to. Vade was a fictional character, by which Voltaire could express frustration or even ‘French-bash’ arrogant French commoners, praise or criticize French and English theater, and much more. The most famous of these ‘Contes’ was “Le Discours aux Welches”, which appears in this anonymously-published 1764 first edition.
