1765 NEW YORK City Montgomerie Charter Stamp Act Declaration Colonial America
The 1735 Montgomerie Charter was one of the most important early documents of New York City. Governor John Montgomery was paramount in the expansion of rights and privileges of colonial New Yorkers, determined to increase the self-governance of New York itself, expand land ownership rights, and declared the city as the controllers of harbors and ferries.
Great Britain’s governing framework was still prevalent in America in the 1730s, but Governor Montgomery made moves to freedom some 40 years before it was permanent. This charter was one of the earliest works in establishing American freedoms from England.
The Stamp Act crisis of 1765 spurred the reissue of the Charter, reestablishing Colonial America’s plea for freedom from the English government. This 1765 second edition of the Montgomerie Charter is considerably rare and valuable; in fact, this work in any edition is almost never found for sale and should be treated with such rarity.
