1766 Madame de Pompadour Letters Memoirs Louis XV France Crebillon Barbe-Marbois
Madame de Pompadour was an influential member of the French court during the reign of Louis XV. This collection of fictitious letters is titled as ‘Letters of Madame de Pompadour’; however, these works of correspondence have since been attributed to François Crebillon, Marquis de Barbé-Marbois. According to Querard,
“These Letters had a great popularity, and they were attributed in time to Crebillon fils. These Letters are full of decency and sown with very piquant anecdotes; they contain political views superior to those of which the author of Tanzaï and Sopha had to be animated”
The Letters contain descriptions, whether true or not, of French wars and peace treaties, political negotiations, and the state of France under Louis XV.
