Joseph Spence was an 18th-century English historian known for his anecdotal essays and translations. One of his most important works was “Polymetis” – a collection of full-page engravings of ancient Greek and Roman art paired with dialogues over the works of art themselves. Each of the dialogues describe:
- various mythological figures
- Jupiter, Medusa, Minerva, Cupid, Hercules, Apollo, Mercury,
- the rise and fall of Roman art
- the influence of Greco-Roman style on ‘modern’ artists
- allegorical poetry such as Spencer’s “Fairy Queen”
- discussions on the philosophy of Socrates
This 1767 edition was edited and abridged by Nicolas Tindal.
