John Brisbane was a relatively unknown Scottish physician who is primarily remembered for his folio of illustrated human anatomy, “The Anatomy of Painting”. In this short treatise, Brisbane describes the skeletal system and the muscle systems of the human anatomy. Each of the pairs of illustrations showcase the focused groups with an extremely detailed mirrored image of the body on the opposite page.  Brisbane incorporates the findings and anatomical discoveries of Bernhard Albinus along with those of early physiologists in Celsus and Cicero.
