Cornelius de Pauw was an 18th-century Dutch historian who is primarily known for his studies on ethnology – he published works on Native American Indians, Egyptians, and Chinese people. It was in this work, “Recherches Philosophiques,” that de Pauw sought to deliver descriptions of foreign peoples to French readers. The work includes much of the following:

  • Condition and state of women in Chinese and Egyptian cultures
  • Diets and manners of eating
  • Painting, sculpture and all oriental art
  • Chemistry and state of science discoveries
  • State of architecture, types of buildings, and design
  • Religious rites, ceremonies, and beliefs
  • Government considerations

The curious part of this work is that Pauw felt he needed to attack the notion that China was once established by Egyptian colonizers. This work was known to have gained the support of Jesuits who were typically heavily critical of Pauw.
