Guibert takes a broad approach to military strategy and the art of war. He is even quoted as saying

“standing armies, while a burden on the public, are inadequate for achievement of great and decisive results in war and the mass of the people, untrained in war, are degenerates.”

This work features charts and tables as well as an impressive set of 27 folding engravings illustrating infantry alignment, battle tactics, and stratagems. This book was of particular importance in France because of its publication just on the eve of the French Revolution.
