Sydney Parkinson was a notable 18th-century Scottish illustrator, known for being the first European to visit the South Sea islands. As a part of James Cook’s first Pacific voyage, Parkinson gathered scientific specimens which allowed him to illustrate over a thousand different sketches of plants and animals.

 

His Journal, which was first published in 1773, is an important account and perspective on Cook’s first voyage. And while Parkinson died of dysentery on the voyage home, his brother published the journal in the following years. According to Hill,

“Parkinson made numerous drawings of botanical and other subjects, including landscapes and portraits of native chiefs. Banks spoke highly of his ‘unbounded industry’ in making for him a much larger collection of drawings than he anticipated. His observations, too, were valuable, and the vocabularies of South Sea languages given in his journal are of great interest.”

 

This first edition is notable for its inclusion of impressive of Aboriginal Tahitian tribes, landscapes, and costumes, as well as descriptions of Otaheite (Tahitian) language, and the geography of New Zealand. Curiously, this work was the first book to include the published word ‘kangaroo’!
