A Voyage Towards the North Pole was Constantine John Phipps’ 1773 Arctic expedition account, that described the British Royal Navy mission undertaken to explore the possibility of an ice-free polar sea. Commissioned by the Royal Society, the journey aboard HMS Racehorse and HMS Carcass resulted in the first scientific descriptions of Arctic wildlife, including the polar bear and ivory gull, as well as geographical observations in the Svalbard archipelago. Though the expedition was ultimately halted by pack ice at 80° 37′ N just north of Spitsbergen, its findings contributed to the broader scientific understanding of the Arctic and significantly influenced future exploration, famously including James Cook’s subsequent voyage.

This 1775 first French edition of Voyage au Pole Boréal includes large folding tables of scientific data, incredible folding maps, and illustrated depictions of the topography and wildlife encountered during the expedition.
