William Smith was an 18^th-century colonial New York lawyer who, in 1757, published what was one of the best 18^th-century accounts of the history of New York from its earliest establishment in 1492 through the first half of the 1700s. This book was written not just to produce a history of colonial America, but Smith hoped to procure British territory with its success. At the time of writing, New York was still under British control and Smith hoped to given land in New York by the British throne for this work.

 

Smith focuses on the British-imposed governmental structures as well as the state of religion in New York, a description of America as a whole, and accounts of the natives and colonists in New York. This particular 1776 edition was published in London the same year as the United States gained its independence.
