Thomas Coryat was an early 17th-century English explorer who began a voyage throughout Europe and Asia. This extensive journey inspired his work ‘Coryat’s Crudities’ which provided a through and detailed view of various European countries – Germany, France, Italy – as well as the Levant. This work is notable for being responsible for introducing the fork to England as a means of meal ware as well as establishing the legend of William Tell.

This charming three-volume edition was published in 1776 based on the original 1611 printing. It includes seven plates as well as woodcut illustrations, some quite bizarre – dragons and unicorns! It is also remembered for its inclusion of poetic verses mocking other notable authors of the day including Farnaby, Donne, and Samuel Page.
