Cardinal de Gondi de Retz was a 17^th-century French Catholic Church father known for his thorough memoirs. Written during the final years of his life, de Retz’s memoirs focused primarily on his own life experiences while offering some insight to the political discourse in the French courts of Louis XIV which ultimately resulted in war. These memoirs were first published in 1717 and went through numerous editions in the 18^th-century, including this Geneva edition published in 1777. According to Chesterfield in the 1774 London edition,
