Jean Sylvain Bailly was a notable 18th-century French astronomer who was beheaded at the height of the French Revolution. According to Hogg, no other astronomer “has played a more important role in the shaping of his country’s political destiny.” He also was a steadfast on the existence of the lost city of Atlantis – a topic he wrote thoroughly about to French literary hero, Voltaire. In a series of letters to Voltaire, he describes lost Aryan civilizations, origins of scientific methods, and various people groups in Asia. Voltaire contested many of Bailly’s theories.
