Jean-Jacques Rousseau was an 18^th-century Enlightenment philosopher whose political theories helped shape aspects of the French Revolution.

Also known as ‘On Education’, ‘Emile’ was Rousseau’s treatise on philosophical views of education in society. This work was quickly banned in the French-speaking world for the blatant controversial material throughout. Concepts that led to its banning included:

• Rousseau’s rejections of organized religion, advocating instead for natural religion
• Attack on traditional education systems
• Philosophical views challenging the authority of government

This 1779 Dublin edition was published the same year as the first Irish printing.
