- While the individual who owned these books has not been identified, the Ursuline Convent in Charleston, Massachusetts existed only briefly, from 1827 to 1834. Regional anti-Catholic sentiments–enflamed in no small part by numerous, notable Protestant preachers including Lyman Beecher and the circulation of rumors about the convent’s treatment of the nuns and students within its walls–incited rioters to raze the convent in 1834. Few books survived the conflagration, as the rioters made a point to burn any tomes left behind by the escaping nuns.
